Jeep x World Surf League

Recently we had the opportunity to work on an online piece with Jeep and World Surf League in one of our favourite regions - Margaret River, a mere three and a half hour journey south of Perth. We got the call on a Wednesday, locked it in on a Thursday then after that weekend we shot down Monday for a whirlwind two days of pre-production meetings, calls and a fifteen hour long day including travel back home.

The purpose behind the content shoot was to showcase the new Jeep Wranglers in the picturesque region alongside some of Jeep’s WSL ambassadors, Filipe Toledo and Jordy Smith during the Margaret River leg of the World Surf League Tour.

We had a team of three for this job, I was directing the filming aspect while Nick Cooper (Instagram @coopsfrootloops) worked on the photography side and we also had Corey Kirwen (Instagram @coreykirwen) shooting hybrid as both a videographer and photographer.

Myself and Corey got down a little earlier on the Monday afternoon and shot some surfing at Yallingup main break, it was perfect offshore the whole time we were down south with a nice little swell rolling through. Corey got some water imagery that became the final shot of the piece that we are really stoked with.

On the shoot day we were up super early to shoot with the Wranglers around the sheltered beaches just West of Dunsborough, here we spent a bunch of time just getting B-Roll and driving shots during a beautiful sunrise. We then moved onto the Bears track to get some off-roading B-Roll footage also.

After this we made our way further South to Margaret River to pick up the pros, we first spent some time with Filipe Toledo, doing interviews in the car and making our way down to Kilcarnup Beach on a decent 4x4 track that the stock Wranglers handled with no dramas whatsoever. Filipe drove one of the Wranglers up and down the beach and had an absolute blast, during this time we shot on the ground and in the air with the Phantom 4 Advanced and also the Mavic Pro 2. Some of the most engaging shots from the short piece were filmed during this time as the main feel behind the piece was to showcase the ambassadors having a great time in the Wranglers, the smiles said it all. We took a different track with Jordy Smith and recorded some interviews while four wheel driving.

Before we knew it, it was 4:30pm and time to wrap the shoot and boot it back to Perth. I spent the next three days solid putting the one minute and 15 second edits together, after some minor revisions the final pieces were approved. This was such a fun job for an incredible client, big thanks to We Are Explorers for passing on the work and trusting is to represent them here on the West Coast of Australia.
